Preparing your Device

Tired of unused tech cluttering your space? A couple of quick steps will protect your data, avoid delays and help you get paid faster with FoneBucks.

1. Back up your photos, contacts and apps

Before you wipe anything, make sure you’ve saved what matters. On iPhone, use iCloud or iTunes/Finder to back up your photos, contacts and app data. On Android, switch on Google backup or use your preferred cloud app. Check that important things like messages, WhatsApp chats and two-factor codes are safely stored elsewhere. Once you’re happy everything you need is backed up, you’re ready to move on to removing accounts and resetting the device.

2. Sign out of iCloud or Google

For Apple devices, go to Settings and tap your name at the top. Scroll down and choose Sign Out, entering your Apple ID password when asked. Make sure Find My iPhone / iPad is turned off as part of this process – this removes Activation Lock so we can test and securely wipe the phone.
On Android, open Settings → Accounts (or Passwords & accounts), tap your Google account and remove it from the device. This also turns off Find My Device and helps prevent any security locks later.

3. Erase your phone or tablet

Now it’s time for a clean slate.
On iPhone / iPad: Go to Settings → General → Reset (or Transfer or Reset iPhone on newer versions), then choose Erase All Content and Settings. Enter your passcode and Apple ID if requested, then confirm.
On Android: Open Settings → System → Reset (this may appear as General management or Backup & reset), then select the option to erase all data / factory reset and confirm.
Wait until the device restarts and shows the initial “Hello” or setup screen. This means your personal data has been removed.

4. Remove SIM, memory cards and extras

Before you pack your device, gently remove your SIM card and any microSD memory card. These are still linked to your number and personal files, so they should stay with you. Take off cases, screen protectors or accessories you want to keep. We don’t need your original box or charger unless we’ve specifically asked for them, so keeping things simple here can help your parcel stay lighter and easier to pack.

5. Check the condition matches your quote

Have a quick look over your device and make sure its condition matches what you selected when you got your FoneBucks price. Check for cracks, heavy scratches, missing buttons or any signs of water damage. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect – we happily buy broken and water-damaged phones – but it’s best to choose the most accurate grade (Good, Poor or Broken) so there are no surprises later. If you’re unsure, err on the slightly lower grade for a smoother, faster payment.
